We had an awesome day with Claudio our driver. He collected us promptly and took care to find out what we expected to get from our trip and made sure that he exceeded these expectations. He called ahead to book a trusted private tour guide who was waiting for us on our arrival in Pompeii - he was fantastic! And then we drove on to Sorrento, stopping at various places on the Amalfie Coast to take photographs and then we had a late lunch in Il Positano, before returning to Rome. Travelling with two young daughters, it was a long day trip, but memorable - and we all thought it was our best day of our week-long holiday to Rome.

Its ruins stand in the center of the modern city as a romantic testament to her past greatness. The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome and it reflected every importatnt event starting from the time of the kings through the Repubblic , the imperial eras to the Middle Ages. The area was originally a marshy land prone to fooding, so the romans inhabitants of the bronze age avoided it in favour of the palatine Hill, descend only to bury the dead. In the 7 th century BC the area was drained and started out as a typical piazza, a public area for senatorial meetings and public ceremonies. Its importance declined along with the empire after the 4 th century, and the temples. monuments and buildings constucted by successive emperors , consuls and senators fell into ruin.Today the huge paving stones of Via sacra are visible along with the well preserved arches of septimio severo and Titus. To the south and above the roman forum is the Palatine hill, a beautiful park containg impressive ancient ruins.it was here that the first city was founded, and splendid Imperial palaces were built over its slopes, so that the word paltine became to be synonymous with the palace of the emperor (palace).Being on a hill was a strategic importance in terms of defence for the Emperor, in the event of an attack on him. From his palace, the Emperor could look down on the city, the Circus Maximus or his own racing track. The palace had its own viaduct to suply water to the complex. Enter now the Roman Colosseum, erected by Emperor Titus in 80 AC, was the first Roman Amphitheater made entirely of stone. During its inauguration, it could hold about 50,000 spectators. The exhibition area was encircled with seats and the actual floor of the arena was sand. Underneath the sand there was a maze of corridors and machinery to help transport animals used for gladiatorial games from their cells to the exhibition area above. The exhibition of the Colosseum usually included gladiatorial games where gladiators fought among one another or against animals that were caught. These games were paid for by the emperor and the other Roman political figures to gain popularity.

This tour features a guided walking tour through the Roman Forum, Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. Meet your guide at your hotel or close to the area of the Colosseum and begin a 4-hour journey to a distant past, filled with stories of emperors and plots, heroes and famous battles… The tour usually begins with a visit of the Colosseum, the biggest amphitheater in the Roman world and the symbol of the city. Inaugurated by the Emperor Titus in 80 AD, with a ceremony that included 100 days of games, the Colosseum seated some 50,000 spectators, who would gather to watch hand-to-hand combats between gladiators, contests between men and animals, and mock naval engagements. Abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was damaged by lightning and earthquakes in medieval times and, even more severely, by vandalism. All the marble seats and decorative materials disappeared, as the site was treated as little more than a quarry for more than 1,000 years. Its preservation began in earnest in the 19th century, with notable efforts led by Pius VIII, and a restoration project was undertaken in the 1990s.

Continue with the visit of the Roman Forum, one of the most evocative places in Rome. Its ruins stand in the center of the modern city as a romantic testament to its past greatness. The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome and it reflected every important event from the time of the kings through the Repubblic, the imperial eras to the Middle Ages. The area was originally a marshy land prone to flooding, so the Romans inhabitants of the bronze age avoided it in favour of the Palatine Hill, descending only to bury the dead. In the 7th century BC the area it was drained and started out as a typical piazza, a public area for senatorial meetings and public ceremonies. Its importance declined along with the empire after the 4th century, and the temples, monuments and buildings that emperors, consuls and senators had built fell into ruin. Today the huge paving stones of Via Sacra are visible along with the impressive arches of Septimius Severus and Titus. To the south and above the Roman Forum there is the Palatine hill, a beautiful park containing impressive ancient ruins. It was here that the first city was founded, and splendid imperial palaces were built over its slopes, so that the word 'palatine' came to be synonymous with the palace of the emperor.

This tour will also take you on the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven ancient hills of the city and the citadel of the earliest Romans. Piazza del Campidoglio, an elegant square designed by Michelangelo in 1536–1546 who was also the architect of the surrounding palazzi, is located at the very top. Formely the seat of the ancient Roman government, it is now the seat of the city municipal government. A modern copy of the bronze equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Augustus dominates the square and if you proceed to the right of Palazzo Senatorio the valley of the Roman Forum will show itself in all its splendour.
