We had an awesome day with Claudio our driver. He collected us promptly and took care to find out what we expected to get from our trip and made sure that he exceeded these expectations. He called ahead to book a trusted private tour guide who was waiting for us on our arrival in Pompeii - he was fantastic! And then we drove on to Sorrento, stopping at various places on the Amalfie Coast to take photographs and then we had a late lunch in Il Positano, before returning to Rome. Travelling with two young daughters, it was a long day trip, but memorable - and we all thought it was our best day of our week-long holiday to Rome.

RMV-02 TIVOLI FOUNTAINS AND GARDENS

Known in classical times as Tibur, Tivoli is located a mere twenty miles from Rome (roughly a half-hour drive) on the lower slopes of the Sabine Hills.Although older than Rome (supposedly founded four centuries later) Tivoli was eventually subjugated to the Eternal City like the rest of Italy and the then known world. By the end of the first century B.C., besides being the quarry source for the Roman travertine stone used on so many of the major monuments including the Colosseum, it had become a popular resort for wealthy Romans because of its mild climate and wonderful panoramas of the city and the Latium plain, but also because it boasted its own oracle, the Sybil Albunea.Marius, Sallust, Cassius, Trajan and Hadrian are only a few of those who had lavish holiday residences here. This popularity lasted on down through the centuries, and Villa D Este is one of the more impressive examples. Our trip to Tivoli is a magical journey into a High Renaissance villa.Box hedge gardens, mazes and hundreds of gurgling fountains are the prime attraction of this wondrous summer villa built in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito Of Este, son of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia.

Sallust, Cassius, Trajan and Hadrian are only a few of those who had built lavish holiday residences in the area.

This popularity lasted through the centuries, and to this day Villa D'Este is one of the most remarkable and comprehensive illustrations of Renaissance culture. Our trip to Tivoli is a magical journey into this 'giardino delle meraviglie' that enchants its visitors with lush vegetation, mazes and hundreds of gurgling fountains.

If you have already seen Villa d'Este or have a keen interest in the ancient Roman world, you may choose to visit Hadrian's Villa instead. Commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, the Villa combines the best elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome in the form of an 'ideal city'.

Add one hour to the tour and you will be able to see both Villa d'Este and Hadrians villa .

Admission fees to the gardens and to the Villa are not included.
