We had an awesome day with Claudio our driver. He collected us promptly and took care to find out what we expected to get from our trip and made sure that he exceeded these expectations. He called ahead to book a trusted private tour guide who was waiting for us on our arrival in Pompeii - he was fantastic! And then we drove on to Sorrento, stopping at various places on the Amalfie Coast to take photographs and then we had a late lunch in Il Positano, before returning to Rome. Travelling with two young daughters, it was a long day trip, but memorable - and we all thought it was our best day of our week-long holiday to Rome.

RMV-03 OSTIA ANTICA

The beautifully preserved ruins of Ostia Antica, Romes ancient seaport, lies twenty miles from the modern metropolis, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded, probably in the 4th century BC, as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. Later, during the centuries when virtually all imports reached the Capital via the Tiber, Ostia gained prominence as the domestic landing for cargo boats.By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by upwards of 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact. Although Ostia now sprawls over 10,000 acres, around a main street that runs for more than a mile, it is still easy to imagine the local shepherds who for centuries sheltered their animals amongst its ruins, for they are an integral part of the tranquil Roman countryside. No modern houses, roads or telephone wires are visible on the horizon. The streets are so quiet one hears only the crickets in the trees and perhaps the echoes of ancient children playing stickball. As you walk along Ostias main street, the Decumanus Maximus, your feet settle into deep ruts left by carrucas, the four-wheeled carts used to ferry merchandise and baggage between Rome and Ostia.

The beautifully preserved ruins of Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport, lie twenty miles from the modern metropolis, in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Founded, probably in the 4th century BC, as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions, Ostia served as a busy commercial port when Rome controlled all the Mediterranean in the 2nd century BC.

With the fall of Rome, the port was abandoned and shepherds with their herds settled in. This once thriving city of around 60,000 people gives a peek at Roman lifestyles with docks, warehouses, apartments and mansions, shops, baths and temples.

As you walk along Ostia's main street, the Decumanus Maximus, your feet settle into deep ruts left by the carts used to ferry merchandise and baggage between Rome and Ostia and you will discover the second best-preserved ancient Roman town after Pompeii.

Admission fee to Ostia antica is not included.
